Energy Efficient Scheduling
Energy and power consumption efficiency are nowadays extremely important in both portable and desktop computing platforms. Battery life/size is determined by the energy requirements of a system, while packaging and cooling are mainly determined by the power consumption. All of these impact the system size and cost. Methods for reducing the power and energy consumption in all kinds of systems are therefore of great importance.
In our research, we focus on reducing the energy consumption in real-time systems. In particular, our approaches target scheduling systems containing dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) processors, while keeping the timing and predictability. Both single processors and multi-processor systems may benefit from efficiently slowing down non-critical computations, and meet deadlines at the same time. ESDlab members have published essential pioneering work in this area, as far back as year 1999.
